More about EMERGE
EMERGE—English Medium Education Research Group for Excellence—is an interdisciplinary research group founded at the University of Warsaw.
We understand EME as the institutionalized use of English as an additional language for multilingual disciplinary education. We also recognize the situated nature of EME, which varies depending on the disciplinary domain, level of education, and specific content and language goals. As such, EME encompasses English-Medium Instruction (EMI), Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), Content-Based Instruction (CBI), and related approaches such as English for Specific Purposes (ESP).
Driven by the exponential growth of EME practices worldwide and the growing need for exploration in this area, we aim to advance EME research, as well as disseminate and implement our findings. In our research, we address the inherent complexities of EME, where linguistic, disciplinary, cognitive, affective, and cultural factors all intersect.
The TEAM originated with linguists but has since attracted scholars from diverse fields, including education, psychology, architecture, chemistry, history, neurobiology, urban planning, and structural engineering. We collaborate with leading universities worldwide, including the University of Oxford (UK), Kyoto University of Technology (Japan), University College London (UK), Kassel University (Germany), Warsaw University of Technology (Poland).
Although we come from diverse academic and disciplinary backgrounds, we all share the belief that there can be little (if any…) disciplinary content without language. Therefore, disciplinary experts and linguists need to collaborate if EME—a “real world problem in which language is a central issue” (Brumfit, 1997, p. 93)—is to further excel.
