Hello :)

EMERGE is an interdisciplinary research group founded at the University of Warsaw, dedicated to advancing research in English Medium Education (EME). We define EME as the institutionalized use of English as an additional language for multilingual disciplinary education, including approaches like English-Medium Instruction (EMI), Content-Based Instruction (CBI), and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).

Why EMERGE?

With the rapid expansion of EME practices globally, there is a growing need to explore, advance, and disseminate research in this field. EMERGE aims to address the inherent complexities of EME—where linguistic, disciplinary, cognitive, affective, and cultural factors intersect—and to share and implement our findings.

Why INTERDISCIPLINARY?

Although we come from diverse academic and disciplinary backgrounds, we all share the belief that there can be little (if any...) disciplinary content without language. Therefore, disciplinary experts and linguists need to collaborate if EME - a “real world problem in which language is a central issue” (Brumfit, 1997, p. 93) - is to excel.
